So a lot is happening in my life right now so I’ve been a little preoccupied. I’m switching occupations soon. God is calling back into full time ministry. I don’t know where or exactly when, but good things are happening. I’ve been working on another blog that is basically an online portfolio of some of my professional work. Alright, so about this blog thing…

I’ve got a pretty comical confession to make. As you’ve noticed, I haven’t posted anything in several days and here’s why… because I made the stupid (and somewhat self-absorbed) claim that I was a creative person. Now, every time I sit down to write something, I feel this enormous pressure to inspire the whole world with my genius. How stupid is that?

I start writing something and I’m like, no that’s stupid…. Delete… start over… ooh, I’m on to something now… this is good… I’m like a creative superhero dude… I’m really clever and witty (and humble)… no wait… CRAP… that sucks too… I’m NOT creative and no one’s going to read this… Great, now I’ve lost the art I’m supposed to help everyone rediscover… loser… hey wait, maybe this whole internal conversation, multiple personality thing (while a bit unnerving) is kinda funny in a ridiculous I’m a dork kinda way… amusing at least?

So, clearly I’ve got issues. Maybe later today I’ll be overcome with some creative revelation… for now this dysfunctional rant is all I got.

Who’s idea was this anyway?

So I thought I’d share a little with you. Feel free to lend ideas, or share a story of your own.

Princess Sassafrass lived in the lovely land of toonafoofoo. A land where, of course, no boys were allowed. Except for her inseparable best friend Rufus, a small flying squirrel. Now for the twist…

Sassafrass was once a very beautiful princess with a small, but ugly, problem. She lied a lot.. Her mother, Queen Molasses, finally got so fed up with her dishonesty that she cast a spell on her turning her into a dragon. A cute dragon though, of course! She is purple and pink with green polka dots and blonde hair. As the story began, Sassafrass was already a dragon. The spell, her mother told her, would be reversed after she told the truth 500 and 200 consecutive times. (500 and 200 was the number my daughter, who was 4 when the story started, used to describe anything huge! I used to ask her, Sophia, how much do you love daddy? She would say, “500 and 200 times! I miss hearing that!) Anyway… so the queen sends her on a special mission to meet a man who would help her to stop telling lies. She tells her that this adventure would take across the magic river. Through the land of Zhokor where the boys live. A land filled with terrible cooties! (What? I’m planting a seed here… get off me!) And finally into Plutoville where she would meet Mr. Pluto to learn the secret that would reverse the curse. Along the way she meets lots of new friends and has lots of great adventures. Another post, another time.

There may have been other stuff but the broth got a little cloudy for some reason and i could no longer tell what was in it… The point is that it struck me that they know no boundaries when it comes to their imagination. If you’ve ever asked a child after they’ve finished coloring a masterpiece, what it is? You’re always surprised and entertained… indeed even fascinated. It’s rarely what you expect it to be.

You were like that once also. You had the uninhibited creative mind of a child. Why do I believe that? Because the Bible teaches that we are all made in the image of God who is the supreme creative being! Therefore, we are creative! Sadly somewhere along about our teenage years, it becomes “uncool” to use our imagination. Even more so, as adults. Society begins to tell us that we need to grow up. Stop acting like a child. The result… we stop exercising our creative muscles and eventually forget we had any at all.

Friends, life is a gift meant to be enjoyed. Not to be squandered away in an abyss of boredom, busyness, predictability… aka, adulthood.

Practice purposeful creativity. Be childish again. Dream. Be silly. You’ll find that EVERY area of your life will be more fulfilling when you rediscover the lost art.

I realize that as I write this, there has not been one reader or subscription, as this is my first post. So there is hardly a “nation” to address. However, I believe that EVERYONE is creative at their core whether they currently believe it or not. So the “nation” already exists, they just haven’t discovered it yet. However, if you are reading this right now, congratulations on being the first of the “nation”.

So…Welcome to my new blog site. I must start by admitting that until today, I’ve not been a big fan of blogging. I’ve seen and read so many blogs that are simply online confessionals, or angry rants, or ” I did this today…” type of blogs and I DON’T GET THAT! (If any of you reading this have that blog, no offense… haha!) Anyway… that was dangerously close to a rant itself, wasn’t it?

So… a little about me and my hopes for this blog.

I’ve been a person immersed in the world of creativity and imagination as far back as I can remember. Check out my profile to read more about me. My goal for this blog is to inspire and be inspired! I strive to allow creativity to permeate every area of my life. I want to be creative in the way I love my wife. My kids. My family and friends. I want to be creative in the way I parent. I want to be creative at work. And I want to inspire others to so the same.

So my hope is that this blog will be a forum for creative brainstorming. A place to ask questions. A place to look for help with an idea. A place to share great ideas, or to share something that inspired you. A book. A movie. A photo. A video. A scripture. A song. It doesn’t matter, share it. I, for one, would love to hear it.
